Hall s Critical Decisions in Periodontology and Dental Implantology, Fifth Edition, is designed to guide students and practitioners in applying their decision-making knowledge in a structured and logical manner using decision trees for diagnosis, treatment selections and options, procedures in various treatments, or evaluating outcomes. This text is organized by clinical problems and is designed to help the dental practitioner make on-target decisions for optimal outcomes. Formerly called Decision Making in Periodontology, this fifth edition text has been updated and expanded, providing a broad array of topics and new techniques in periodontal therapy and dental implantology. Over 100 contributing authors share their expertise and reasoning behind their decision making, representing both North American and international thinking.

This book is intended as a reference for general dentists, dental specialists, residents, dental hygienists, and those preparing for specialty boards. Its purpose is to streamline the clinical examination and aid in diagnosis for clinical situations routinely seen in practice. Clinical situations are presented in the form of an algorithm (decision tree) to assist in diagnosis and treatment. Te advantage of using an algorithm is that it facilitates a logical review of possible risks, alternatives, consequences, resource requirements, and probable outcomes, all in advance of commencing treatment. Te frst edition of Decision Making in Periodontology was a teaching tool developed by Dr. Walter Hall in 1988. Recognizing complex clinical situations with several sequential courses of action in the decision-making process, Dr. Hall developed treatment scenarios (algorithms) that outlined the diagnostic process, possible courses of therapy, and plausible treatment outcomes. Using the algorithms or decision trees in this volume, the reader can learn the logic of decision making and the rationale for selecting a strategy that will most likely provide the best diagnosis and a successful therapeutic outcome. Since the frst edition, rapid changes and advances in periodontal regeneration, esthetics, and dental implantology have broadened our knowledge base. With this in mind, we have recruited more than 100 experts to discuss their logic and thought processes in various clinical situations. Tis ffh edition has been updated and expanded to include additional topics relevant to modern, “state of the art” practice. Tis expansion— coupled with a “tip of the hat” to Dr. Hall—has led us to name this work Hall’s Critical Decisions in Periodontology and Dental Implantology.
