Review

This textbook succeeds in addressing the essential topics related to the historical background, basic science, diagnosis, and treatment of pediatric brain and spinal cord neoplasms. This book is one of the very few that could sit on the desk as a near-comprehensive reference for every neuro-oncologist and neurosurgeon. It is also a wonderful reference that pediatric neurologists, oncologists, and radiation oncologists should strongly consider having on their bookshelf. It would be a very useful text for any physician or student needing a comprehensive reference on this subject. The [Current Diagnosis and Therapeutic Approaches and Outcomes and Complications] sections contain topics not covered in other textbooks of this type and are one feature that makes this textook stand out from others. The clinical sections are laced with bullet summaries of a topic…placed within the body of the text in bold type, set within a shaded box, which enables the reader to quickly grasp the important concepts that are presented. The editors have taken great efforts to ensure that the images, which include color photomicrographs, MRIs and CTs, patient photographs, drawings, and operative photographs, are all of excellent quality. There are a number of useful tables throughout the textbook as well. The chapters are well referenced with appropriate and up-to-date literature citations. The book is well written and easy to navigate. I have looked through all of my neuro-oncology textbooks, and I did not find a volume that comes close in terms of the number of radiographic images or photomicrographs (including color images when appropriate) used in this book, which by themselves would justify its cost. The topic summaries (the boxes) will be most helpful for less experienced readers and are used appropriately throughout the book. This is a handsome book, printed on thick gloss paper that will hold up for years. I can highly recommend this book to the wide audience for whom it was written.–Neuro-OncologyA comprehensive book . . . remarkably interesting . . . Neurologists will especially appreciate the beautifuly illustrated sections on neuroradiology and neurosurgical neuropathology as well as chapters describing chemotherapy and radiotherapy and the approaches of different cooperative clinical trial groups. . . . Every neurology and neurosurgery library will want this book. – Annals of Neurology A well-organized book…its pages are overflowing with informative color histological slides and descriptions…well-written chapters…all of the photographs are of excellent quality…recommended without hesitation… –Pediatric NeurosurgeryA superb overview…each chapter is well written and concise…provides a succinct summary of the clinical, radiological, and pathological features of each tumor…a useful reference for the treatment of pediatric central nervous system tumors. –Journal of NeurosurgeryAn up-to-date reference…the authors are authorities on the subject…a good, comprehensive, and updated reference for the general neurosurgeon, as well as for pediatric oncologists, neurologists, pediatric neurologists, and pediatricians. –Doody’s Review JournalA comprehensive text…very well-organized…illustrations are excellent…the authors are to be congratulated for an outstanding effort…an excellent addition to one’s library. –Surgical NeurologyA good overview of the field of pediatric neuro-oncology…beautifully illustrated…covers all aspects of the care of children with CNS tumors…provides readily accessible up-to-date information…especially useful to young medical staff members in pediatric oncology and neurosurgery departments… –Annals of OncologyThe organization of the book is very didactic, with many illustrations of excellent quality…recommended to medical libraries. –The Journal of Endocrine Genetics
