Sensitive Skin Syndrome, 2ed

Sensitive skin is a widely reported condition where there is subjective cutaneous hyper-reactivity to environmental factors. Progress has been made in many aspects of the background science that will help clinicians in their management of patients presenting with the condition. This new text sums up the advances in thinking on pathophysiology, classification, methods of investigation, and the different susceptibilities of different types of skin.

Sensitive skin is a prevalent clinical condition that dermatologists should be prepared to recognize, understand, and manage. Affected individuals mostly report unpleasant sensations of itching, burning, and stinging with exposure to various skin care products and/or environmental factors. In some western counties, as high as 50% of women and a 33% of men report various degrees of skin sensitivity affecting their quality of life.

New developments and research over the past few years have shed light on some aspects of underlying pathomechanisms, yet there is much to be learned. Correct clinical categorization of patients is key for clinical management and focused research. Currently, the diagnosis is clinical and based on constellation of symptoms, suggesting the diagnosis of sensitive skin syndrome; however, patients may, in fact, be affected with more than one syndrome/condition. Work of astute clinicians and directed research can further elucidate involved mechanisms and provide management solutions.
