As is ofen the case for textbooks, the success of the frst edition of Comprehensive Clef Care has been tempered by the gradual realization of its shortcomings and by an understanding that knowledge is fluid and that we only gain true wisdom through the realization that what we resolutely accept as truth today may seem to us naive or even fatuous tomorrow. Te second edition of Comprehensive Clef Care represents an evolution in this understanding. It is our hope that the work will serve its readers well as a comprehensive and contemporary manual for service to children and adults with clefs, as well as to their families.

Te inclusion of new chapters reflects the necessary and inevitable progression in thought and comprehension within the discipline. Although clef-care providers have long recognized the benefts of interdisciplinary team care, there has been a signifcant increase in our understanding of the need to practice our art based not upon preference, but upon evidence. Te measurement and honest assessment of clinical outcomes is our solemn responsibility to our patients, and it is for this reason that the text has been expanded to include a more thorough discussion of outcomes measurement and comparative evaluation.
