The Pocket Guide To Health Promotion, 1ed

The ‘Pocket Guide to Health Promotion’ is a short, punchy and practical guide to health promotion aimed at students and practitioners.

The ‘Pocket Guide to Health Promotion’ has been written to be an invaluable companion for practitioners, students and anyone who is passionate about promoting health. Most of all, it has been written for field workers who every day strive to deliver health promotion programmes, sometimes without adequate support or resources, to the best of their ability. The idea for the pocket guide came from my own experiences with international field workers and their need for a book that covered only the most essential aspects of health promotion in practice.

The ‘Pocket Guide to Health Promotion’ is not intended to be a theoretical foundation or a manual of how to implement specific interventions. The purpose is to provide clear practice pathways within an empowerment framework for health promotion. I therefore intentionally do not include approaches that depend heavily on information transfer and behaviour change such as health education and social marketing. A key question that is commonly asked by field workers is: Do we want to help others to empower themselves or to simply change their behaviour? This is an important ethical and practical issue that is addressed in the pocket guide.

The pocket guide is a convenient source book for the understanding of key concepts and methods used in health promotion. The guide does not have to be read sequentially. Instead, the reader can simply access any chapter, entry or combination of headings to gain easy access. The reader can quickly access the information that they require, aided by practical examples and insightful remarks provided in the text. The rationale for the choice of headings is intended to help the reader to better understand how health promotion theory can be applied in practice.
