Principles and Practice of Pediatric Oncology, 5ed

The definitive, most comprehensive text on pediatric oncology is now in its thoroughly updated Fifth Edition. A multidisciplinary group of the world’s foremost specialists presents state-of-the-art information and guidelines on every aspect of pediatric cancer—from molecular biology and genetics to diagnosis, multimodal therapy, follow-up, and supportive care.

This edition has new chapters on pathology and molecular diagnosis of leukemias and lymphomas, cellular and gene therapies, regulating patient safety in cancer treatment, non-rhabdo soft tissue sarcomas of childhood, and communicating with patients and families. Many of the previous edition’s chapters have been rewritten by new contributors. Also included are up-to-date listings of resources for patients, families, and physicians.

The book contains predominantly black-and-white illustrations, with some color illustrations.

Editorial Reviews

Reviewer: Marshall A Schorin, MD (Tulane University School of Medicine)
Description: This is the fifth edition of a modern classic. Much has been added to the discipline since the publication of the previous edition in 2001. The editors have collected 57 chapters from their 164 authors, all experts in their fields.
Purpose: The editors strive to compile the extensive knowledge and information developed since the publication of the previous edition. They have done a great job.
Audience: The book is aimed, I suppose, at practitioners at the level of fellow or young oncologist. Like many successful comprehensive textbooks in other areas of medicine, it has something to offer the medical student or house officer as well as the experienced oncologist. I have gotten used to eschewing textbooks in favor of journal articles and group protocols, but I find a great deal of depth in the subject coverage as well as the basic science information in this book, and I will plan to refer to it regularly now that I’m reminded of it.
Features: There is an extensive section on the basic science of pediatric oncology and the approach to the patient. Subsequent sections cover the principles of multimodal therapy and deal with specific types of cancer, then supportive care and other issues, such as late effects and insurance. The approach seems to be to provide as extensive referencing as possible. This detail allows one to pursue pertinent examples or fine points as needed, and the reader who is looking for an overview can simply ignore these footnotes. On the other hand, this tome is not meant for the casual reader; one looking for a quick insight might be advised to look elsewhere. Some of the discussions seem choppy, but it is difficult both to include as much material as possible and to limit the size of the book to one volume. The result is that some segues are rough and saltatory, but this is not a major flaw.
Assessment: This is the definitive textbook extant; no other aims to be so comprehensive. A great deal has been learned since the previous edition was published, and this is an appropriate time interval for a new one to come out.
