This new edition of Hair Transplantation a highly acclaimed standard reference has been restructured for greater practical usefulness, to follow the clinical setting: it meticulously describes and illustrates all procedures utilized by the most recognized leaders in the field, to showcase current trends, controversies, and innovations in practice. An integral DVD features video-clips of the surgical procedures themselves being performed to complete this comprehensive reference.

Editing a medical textbook is without doubt one of the most inexplicable and fascinating types of masochism. Having done this once, why does anybody do it again? And yet here I am co-editor of this fifth edition of Hair Transplantation. There are many reasons for what my long-suffering wife and secretary refer to as these periodic bouts of insanity, but the chief one has always been to inform hair restoration surgeons, as best I can, of prevailing trends in surgical philosophy and techniques, while at the same time adding enough information to encourage the reader to spend some time questioning these trends. When I first read the quote that precedes this preface, it completely but simply described that objective—and it represents a good approach to life just as much as for the practice of medicine.

Hair restoration surgery advances relentlessly. Since the last edition of this textbook, in many practices hair survival with Follicular Unit Transplanting now consistently is 90% to 100%, at follicular unit densities that produce good hair coverage in a single session (approximately 30 FU/cm2). As a result, other types of grafting have in almost all instances become unnecessary. In the donor area, techniques that minimize follicle transection during strip excision are becoming more widely used while Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is being practiced by ever greater numbers of practitioners. (The co-author of a guarded commentary on FUE in our last edition has become one of the most enthusiastic proponents of it since then.) Where, not too long ago, hair restoration surgery was almost exclusively limited to the Americas, Western Europe, Australia, Japan and Korea, the rise of its popularity in Russia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, India and all of Asia, has been spectacular. The contents and the authors of this edition reflect all of those changes.
