Hamilton, Boyd and Mossman’s Human Embryology the whole text has been extensively revised. We have attempted to deal with the functional aspects of different organs during development. Too often in the past, structure and function in living organisms have been studied in isolation from each other and the findings presented independently.

An additional chapter Human Embryology has been incorporated on the Development, Structure and Functional activities of the placenta. In it, transport across the placental barrier and the immunological responses between mother and fetus are discussed. We feel that the student should have some appreciation of these important concepts. Particular attention has been given to the chapters dealing with Implantation; with Determination, Differentiation, the Organiser Mechanism, Abnormal Development, and Twinning. The chapter on the Cardio-vascular System, in which many new photo-micrographs have been added, has been recast; we believe this is necessary in view of the importance of this system in clinical medicine.
