A subsequent human revision was done primarily in terms of content, so that the book will read stylistically differently from a conventional translation.

The present fifth edition of the Surgical Textbook of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery has a varied history. Originally, it was part of a General and Special Surgical Textbook in four volumes, which was published by Springer-Verlag with M. Kirschner and A. Schubert as the first editors from 1927 to 1940. A special position of our subject did not exist at that time. Today, the first edition is included in the digitization project “Springer Book Archives” by the publisher—with publications that have appeared since the beginnings of the publishing house in 1842.
