Achieving Competencies for Nursing Practice, 1ed

Quality patient care relies on the demonstration of competencies by nurses at all stages of their education and developing career. This textbook is designed to help student nurses better understand the competencies set out by the NMC and equip them to achieve and demonstrate competency as they prepare to qualify as a nurse.

This book is for all student nurses on pre-registration degree programmes in nursing across the UK. It supports the development of graduate thinking and the demonstration of graduate attributes by the individual student in clinical practice. The primary aim of the book is to offer a text for student nurses, whatever their chosen feld of practice, to explore the relevance and meaning of the NMC competencies to their personal learning throughout the duration of their course. There are chapters that relate to all four felds of practice – child, adult, mental health and learning disabilities. Each feld of nursing is acknowledged and addressed as every student requires an insight into all felds of nursing practice. The book also provides a basis for exploring other felds of care and identifying areas of best practice for the student to adopt. Furthermore, it addresses the radical move to specifc generic and feld competencies – that is, competencies required by all nurses, irrespective of their chosen feld of study as well as specifc competencies to their chosen feld of study. The book also supports the rich opportunities in shared learning required by all nurses to develop their graduate thinking. We believe that it will also be helpful for academics, educators, mentors and the many other practitioners that support students in diverse settings as part of their preparation for their roles as frst-year, second-year, third-year or even fourth-year students (Scotland) and fnally as graduate practitioners.
