About the Author
Susan C. Taylor, MD, a Harvard, Columbia and University of Pennsylvania educated physician as well as a diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Dermatology, has been at the forefront of scientific research, clinical care and education for the Dermatologic health of populations of Africans, Asians, Latinos and Native Americans.
Dr. Taylor was the Founding Director of the Skin of Color Center at St. Luke’s Hospital Center in New York, a first of its kind in the nation. Dr. Taylor has delivered over 250 lectures by invitation across Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and the United States. Additionally, she have been a medical contributor and expert for national and local television and radio programming including the Today Show, Good Morning America and MSNBC. She co-authored two major dermatology textbooks, Dermatology for Skin of Color and Treatment for Skin of Color, two books for the lay-public, number textbook chapters, journal articles and websites.
- Paul Kelly, MD, a graduate of Brown University and Howard University College of Medicine, was a leader and professor in the field of dermatology, with a focus on treatments for skin of color.
He served for 35 years as Chief of the Division of Dermatology, King/Drew Medical Center, and as a Clinical Professor of Dermatology at the University of California, Los Angeles.
He trained over 100 dermatology residents and medical students, while being a prolific writer and speaker on keloids, pseudofolliculitis barbae and the color of man. He was the first Honorary Member of the Skin of Color Society and was awarded the Outstanding Professor Award by the Charles Drew University School of Medicine, Los Angeles.
The last five years of his life was as a Fulbright Scholar, a Scholar-in-Residence, and a researcher at the Sultan Qaboos University, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Division of Dermatology, Muscat, Sultanate of Oman.
Henry W. Lim, MD, is Chairman and C.S. Livingood Chair of the Department of Dermatology, Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, Michigan, USA. In 2000, he established the Multicultural Dermatology Center at Henry Ford, and its Vitiligo Research and Treatment Center is one of the largest and most active vitiligo centers in the world. He has been the editor and on the editorial board of a number of journals in dermatology, and has been the editor/coeditor of 5 published textbooks. He is a recognized authority on photodermatology and has published more than 350 articles, many on the topic of skin of color. He has served in the leadership role in many dermatological societies. He was recently elected as the president of the American Academy of Dermatology, with the term starting in March, 2017.
Ana Maria Anido Serran, MD was born in the Republic of Cuba and is a graduate of the Medical College at the University of Havana. After medical school she transitioned to the Sultanate of Oman where she has been an academic and clinical dermatologist for more than twenty years. At present she is a Senior Registrar at the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Muscat with responsibilities for clinical dermatology, administration, teaching, and research. Dr. Anido Serrano is the Principal Investigator for Dr. Kelly’s international Fulbright Scholar keloid research project in Oman. She was selected by Dr. Kelly to be one of the co-editors of this book because of her dedication and academic interests in dermatology for skin of color.
